Caregiver with Patient

What is hospice?
A hospice was traditionally a place of shelter and rest for travelers on a long journey. Today, hospice is a place of care for those nearing the end of life's journey. There is comfort, care, and special emphasis on the value of life in all its phases.

The philosophy of hospice
Hospice neither hastens nor postpones death. Rather, a team of caring professionals and volunteers work together to help the patient and family attain a measure of comfort and peace as death approaches. It seeks to meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of the patient and family.

Hospice uses volunteers as an integral part of the program. It emphasizes pain and symptom control, focuses on home care, provides hospital in-patient care when indicated, and extends throughout the bereavement period.

Who is eligible for hospice?
Patients with any terminal illness are eligible for hospice. Those qualified patients who have a caregiver, either a spouse, relative, or friend, are also available for hospice.

How can I help?
There are many ways in which you can help. Some include becoming a volunteer, sponsoring a program for your club or organization or giving a memorial or contribution.
